Chapter Twenty-Four

Daisy smiled down at the recumbent shapes asleep on the couch. Jackson had an arm around Elvis. She experienced a pang of jealousy and wasn’t sure whose snores were worse. Jackson had looked shattered when he’d arrived. The group who’d turned up while she was there had been, apparently, just the first in a long line of problems that sounded like a party had gone horribly wrong.

‘All in a day’s work,’ he said, when she’d asked how he’d coped. Technically, it was probably night rather than day, but the large dark shadows under his eyes told another story.

When she’d said make yourself comfy while I cook breakfast, lying down and going to sleep wasn’t entirely what she meant, and if she’d known that was what he intended, she might have offered him the use of her bed, or Robbie’s.

Monday was staff training day so she left both dog and man sleeping. The smoked salmon, scrambled egg and toast wouldn’t keep. She’d eaten hers and put Jackson’s to one side to feed Elvis later. That dog was far less concerned about rubbery eggs than anyone else she knew. She didn’t mention to the girls that she had a strange man asleep in her flat, as they fashioned the sixty travel bags into an artistic, can’t-miss display in the middle of reception.

Mollie and Sasha printed the posters Robbie had designed last week. She wondered how much help he’d had with them — they were faultless. She thought of the man sleeping on her couch and felt warm inside. Jackson was right: it was a great scheme — a no-brainer.

Apparently, anybody being booked in since Thursday had been told of the promotion and offered the deal. Looking at the diary, it didn’t look like the display would be there long. Daisy didn’t believe for one minute the suppliers intended leg waxes or eyelash lifts to be included in the promotion, but there was nothing in the small print to suggest they wouldn’t credit her in full as long as the voucher had been signed.

Daisy wondered how many other salons would pick up on that. If Robbie hadn’t, she wasn’t sure that she would have. The extra money she got from this promotion would go to the staff Christmas party and maybe a sizeable contribution to Robbie’s skateboard fund.

Sasha had found a pot of face mask when she’d tidied one of the treatment rooms. ‘It’s black,’ she said.

‘How long has that been there?’ Daisy asked as she handed round mid-morning cups of coffee and cakes from the bakery down the road. Cakes or pastries were always her treat, but this week she was especially grateful considering how Molly and Sasha had looked after everything last week when she’d had to dash off for all sorts of appointments. The girls shook their heads.

‘Can we try it?’ Sasha asked.

Daisy opened the jar and smelled it. Not exactly pleasant but not rank. ‘Providing neither of you sue if you develop a skin problem because of it, or your skin dissolves.
